CASALE DEL GIGLIO<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\u00abAs a child and young teenager the fields and lanes of the\u00a0family estate, Casale del Giglio, were nothing more to\u00a0Antonio Santarelli than a place where he could spend carefree\u00a0weekends and indulge his budding passion for motorbike\u00a0riding; but all that changed when he joined his father\u00a0Dino in the family business. By then, a shrewd twenty-five\u00a0year old, he knew instinctively that their unconventional\u00a0land in the Agro Pontino valley, some 50 kms south of\u00a0Rome, offered a unique opportunity to attempt something\u00a0no-one had ever attempted before.<\/p>\n
The total lack of any vine growing tradition in the area\u00a0meant that Antonio and his father could give free rein to\u00a0their pioneering ideas. Some of the\u00a0most famous ampelographers and\u00a0university researchers of the day\u00a0were convinced by these ideas and\u00a0were inspired to join them in a research\u00a0project which was launched in 1985 with the\u00a0planting of close to 60 different experimental
\nvines in Casale del Giglio\u2019s soil.<\/p>\n
No scheme as bold and daring had ever been approached\u00a0in such a scientific way before and Casale del Giglio\u2019s\u00a0young winemaker, Paolo Tiefenthaler, was to become its\u00a0leading light.\u00a0The believers in the endeavour were amply rewarded for\u00a0their audacity however when they achieved their first significant\u00a0results from the red grape varieties Syrah and Petit\u00a0Verdot and from whites such as Sauvignon, Viognier and\u00a0Petit Manseng. These varieties have given rise to monovarietal\u00a0wines and to blends, all of which offer excellent value\u00a0for money.<\/p>\n
The estate\u2019s flagship wine is the rich, red Mater Matuta (Syrah\u00a0with a touch of Petit Verdot); a proud thoroughbred, fullbodied,
\nsilky and seductive on the palate with aromas of\u00a0woodland fruits, coffee beans and spice.
\nAphrodisium, a sweet golden-yellow late harvest wine, is a\u00a0blend of Petit Manseng, Viognier, Greco and Fiano.\u00bb*<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>Since the project aimed at identifying and maximising\u00a0the territory\u2019s potential for quality viticulture, useful\u00a0comparisons were made with processes adopted in\u00a0Bordeaux, California and Australia, wine producing areas\u00a0of the world influenced, like the Agro Pontino valley, by a\u00a0maritime climate.<\/p>\n
Casale del Giglio subscribes to the philosophy that \u201cthe future\u00a0of Italian viticulture relies not only on consolidating the\u00a0image of its traditional wine producing zones but on its\u00a0ability to produce top quality wines at favourable prices in\u00a0areas whose potential is still relatively unexplored.\u201d<\/p>\n
As a result of Casale del Giglio\u2019s research, the European\u00a0Community authorized the cultivation of \u2018new recommended\u00a0varieties\u2019 such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit\u00a0Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the province of Latina\u00a0(from 1990) while other varieties were authorized later.<\/p>\n
Casale del Giglio has converted its 180 hectares of vineyard\u00a0to the cordon trained system, electing to plant those grape\u00a0varieties which adapt well to the territory and produce\u00a0quality wines.<\/p>\n
Casale del Giglio currently offers a range of twentytwo products\u00a0– seven white wines, one ros\u00e9, seven reds,\u00a0one late harvest,\u00a0three grappas and an extra virgin olive oil.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
